More protein

Bread is not usually a high-protein food, but a loaf with a little more protein can still be more satisfying. It is also worth thinking about what goes on the bread, because toast with eggs or cottage cheese is very different from toast with jam or chocolate spread.

Less refined is better

Even a healthier bread can add up if the slices are big or you are eating several at once. That is why it is worth checking the calories and fibre per slice, not just per 100g. Some breads only seem lighter because the slices are smaller.

    Look for wholemeal, whole grain or whole wheat flour near the top, rather than just wheat flour or refined flour. In the UK, a loaf can only be called wholemeal if all the flour used is wholemeal.
  • The fibre content
    Brown bread often has more fibre than white bread, but the difference can vary quite a bit, so it is still worth checking the label. The NHS uses 6g fibre per 100g as a guide for a high-fibre food.
  • Whether it is truly whole grain or wholemeal
    A loaf can look darker and still not be a true whole grain bread.
  • Whether it just looks healthier than it is
    Words like brown are not enough on their own. The ingredient list and nutrition panel tell you much more.

Is sourdough really a good choice for weight loss?

Sourdough has a healthy image, but it is not automatically healthier or lower in calories than other bread. It can still be a decent choice, but it depends on what it is made from. If it is mostly white flour, it is still a refined bread.

Schneiderbrot Whole Grain Vollkornbrot Rye

Another very good rye option. It is lower in calories than the others here, high in fibre, and has a very short ingredients list.

Jason’s Protein Sourdough Sunflower Seeded Bread

Not a whole grain loaf, but still a strong choice because the protein is unusually high and it contains no additives or preservatives.

Wildfarmed Sliced Seeded Bread

A solid option if you want something more supermarket-style but still fairly strong on fibre and protein.

Wildfarmed Sliced Seeded Bread sits somewhere in the middle, with a good balance of fibre and protein, although it is also the highest in calories of the four.

US bread examples

Good options do exist in the US, but the shortlist is fairly small.

Here are the three breads I would focus on first.

Food for Life Ezekiel 4:9 Sprouted Whole Grain Bread

This is probably the strongest overall pick. It has no added sugar, no preservatives, and it is very high in both fibre and protein for bread. You can buy it at Target, Walmart and Amazon, and because it is sold frozen, it is best kept in the freezer.

Food for Life Ezekiel 4:9 Sprouted Whole Grain Sesame Bread

This is another very good option from the same brand. It keeps the same clean sprouted grain base, also has no added sugar, and gives you a little more protein than the original. You can buy it at Target, Walmart and Amazon.

Mestemacher Whole Rye Bread

If you prefer a dense rye loaf, this is the best one I found. It has a very short ingredients list, no preservatives, no added sugar, and very strong fibre for the calories. You can buy it at Walmart and Amazon, although it may not be as easy to find locally as Ezekiel.

The per 100g values below are based on each bread’s serving size and nutrition per slice. For the two Ezekiel breads, that is 1 slice weighing 34g. For Mestemacher Whole Rye Bread, it is 1 piece weighing 72g.

That is why it makes sense to choose a bread that is less refined, has decent fibre and keeps you fuller for longer. But in the end, it is your overall diet that matters most.
