A Sharp Pain Sent Monaleo to the Emergency Room
The 24-year-old rapper, whose real name is Leondra Gay, revealed the reason for the cancellations in a social media post. “I’m sorry yall. I’m upset about having to cancel my shows and did not expect this to happen. Yesterday, out of nowhere got a sharp pain in my lower abdomen. Took some pain meds 2 hours went by the pain got worse. I went to the ER and could hardly make it through the ultrasound without throwing up. Worst pain ever fr. I had an inflamed cyst the size of a softball that had twisted and cut off blood flow and caused bleeding in my abdomen. Had to have emergency surgery and unfortunately lost an ovary and fallopian tube in the process,” she posted from her verified page on X.
She added a sad face emoticon to illustrate her distress about removing the dates from the tour due to health challenges. This is not the first time she has been vocal about her health. She openly discusses her previous bouts with depression and advocates for mental health access.
What Are Ovarian Cysts?
Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs that can form on the ovaries. Ultrasounds are used to diagnose ovarian cysts. These cysts are extremely common. They appear frequently in those of reproductive ages.
Ovarian cysts are heavily connected to conditions that disproportionately impact Black women, including endometriosis and polycystic ovary syndrome.
How Are Ovarian Cysts Treated?
Some dissipate on their own, but others need surgical intervention. Stats reports that “ovarian cysts can lead to complications such as pelvic pain, cyst rupture, blood loss, and ovarian torsion that require prompt management.”
Monaleo naming the size of the cyst is connected to her need for surgery. “Patients whose cyst diameter has exceeded 5 cm should be actively treated with surgical treatments,” according to a 2021 article from the Journal of Infection and Public Health. The average softball generally starts at about 10 inches. This indicates that the case the “Putting Ya Dine” rapper was dealing with was very serious. The pain she was in was likely extreme and debilitating.
Artists often work extremely late hours under bright lights and stressful circumstances. Monaleo had done 25 consecutive shows before being forced to deal with the symptoms of the inflamed cyst in her body.
Monaleo’s “Who Did The Body” tour has been highly anticipated by her growing fanbase. They showed up to chant the lyrics of “Sexy Soulaan” and “Beating Down Yo Block,” enchanted by her bawdy bars, blush coated cheeks and Tex-Mex coded double entendres. She recently became emotional on stage during a soul out tour stop where fans recited her songs word for word.
Many have invested in pink attire to represent their love for the rapper, who uses the color as a girlish contrast to her tough persona. She recently had a fabulous all pink wedding to her longtime love Stunna 4 Vegas that went viral. The pair share a toddler son.
It is still possible for someone to conceive with one fallopian tube, if they desire to have one healthy fallopian tube, according to the Cleveland Clinic.
She addressed this and shared that she was still under in-patient care as the post was published. “Still hospitalized here in memphis waiting to be released so i can get back home and recover but i genuinely apologize for anyone inconvenienced i know yall travel to see me, buy outfits, pay for makeup & hair appointments etc. None of that is lost on me and i appreciate all the love and support from the bottom of my heart. We ARE currently sorting through the refund process and looking at rescheduling dates as promised,” she continued in the X post.
What Are Signs Of Ovarian Cysts?
Dull aching pain, constant bloating, and sharp, sudden pains are symptoms of ovarian cysts. These should not be ignored, even in the middle of a busy work schedule.
Monaleo concluded her post on X by encouraging her fans, many of whom are hard-working Black women, to embrace the feeling they get when their bodies are out of alignment. She urged them to take red flags seriously by being vulnerable about her reluctance to seek treatment.
“I’m not sure how long this healing process will take. I do want to say this though : listen to your body when things are off. As a person who hates ER’s and never wants to go this could’ve been a lot worse. Love yall lots. Wait up for me the Pimpcess willi be back and better !!!!!”
We will be waiting and praying for her recovery.
